Exposing students to the possibilities of science

Twelfth grader Efe Oghoghome is pretty sure that she wants to be a doctor someday, but she had no idea what performing surgery would really be like – until a recent visit to Liberty Science Center gave her a look inside a real operating room.

Oghoghome and her class from Pemberton Township High School watched live on a big screen as Dr. Michael C. Pitter of Newark Beth Israel Medical Center performed a hysterectomy using laproscopic instruments. Holding a microphone, Oghoghome asked questions about the operation, and Dr. Pitter responded as he worked.

It was all part of Liberty Science Center’s new Live From… Robotic Surgery program, which uses live videoconferencing to take students into the O.R. “Being able to watch while it was happening and ask questions was great,” Oghoghome said. She's more sure than ever that she wants to be a doctor, although now she thinks she might like to design the high-tech instruments, too. "Maybe I'll do both," she said.

The award-winning Live From... is just one of literally hundreds of exciting programs designed by Liberty Science Center to engage, educate and inspire students like Oghoghome – and like yours. Many programs are available here in the new 20,000 square-foot Jennifer A. Chalsty Center for Science Learning and Teaching. Others can come to your classroom, either in person or via videoconferencing.

Come for a field trip, book one of our educational programs, or visit for professional development training that takes advantage of resources you'll find nowhere else. You, your students and society will reap the rewards.
