Camp In FAQs 2011 – 2012
-
Each group is registered by a group liaison. The group liaison contacts Liberty Science Center with the initial registration, submits all registration materials, and is responsible for group payments, group behavior, and the dissemination of all information to group members.
-
Members of any type of organized youth group can attend a Camp In. This includes scout groups, youth groups, schools, or clubs. Liberty Science Center Members can attend any co-ed Camp In. Please print out the group registration form and write “MEMBER” in the space for Group Name.
-
When making reservations, make a “best guess” of the group size by subtracting ten percent from all possible participants. It is easier to add spaces than cancel extra reservations later. If your numbers are low, consider inviting others to join you. For example, a scout troop could invite other troops to participate.
-
Based on space availability, we can increase a reservation size until two weeks before the Camp In. Once it has been increased, you will not be permitted to decrease it again. Payment for additional spaces is due when the reservation is increased. To avoid confusion, group additions or deletions must come from the group liaison.
-
Camp Ins are available on a first-come, first-served basis. If you would like to reserve your Camp In over the phone, please be prepared to remit a 25 percent non-refundable, non-transferable deposit at the time of reservation. Once the reservation is made, it cannot be cancelled.

-
A schedule will be assigned to your group upon arrival. Check the Camp In website for a schedule sample. Please note the times, locations and activities will differ from the sample.
-
While you may not arrive at the same time, you will have plenty of opportunities to interact with your group. Based on the size of your group, you will be scheduled for the same snack time, IMAX Dome Theater show, 3D movie, snack, breakfast, and sleep site. Due to theater size restrictions, groups over 300 will be split between movie show times.
-
The group liaison must note the late arrival on the Group Advisory Form. We will register anyone on the roster until 10:00 pm.
-
The group liaison must note the early departure on the Group Advisory Form. If the person leaving is an adult they must sign out at the Welcome Desk. If the person is a minor, the liaison must be present at the Welcome Desk to verify that the child is leaving with the correct person. The person picking up the minor must have valid identification (e.g., driver’s license). Once a party leaves, they will not be able to return to the program.

Member discounts do not apply to the Camp In program.

-
Gear must be stored in the designated location assigned to you at check in. This will be on the same floor as your sleep site, though not necessarily the same location where you will sleep. All gear must remain in storage until 11:00pm.
-
You should bring a sleeping bag, pillow, blanket, and minimal toiletries. All gear should be packed in plastic bags with the camper’s name and group name printed on the bag. The XXL zip top bags have worked very well in the past. Chaperones are asked to bring flashlights for campers. Campers are not permitted to bring flashlights. A suggested packing list is available on the Camp In website.
-
Campers are strongly discouraged from bringing valuables and portable electronic devices as they distract from the overall Science Center experience and may get lost.
-
Single-size, battery or manually powered air mattresses are permitted for adults only. We encourage all campers to bring sleeping mats or camping pads as the exhibit floors are hard.
-
We strongly recommend getting a good night sleep on the night before your Camp In. Our Overnight Team will be there to make sure the sleeping spaces are safe, reasonably comfortable, and as quiet as possible; however, sleeping in an unfamiliar environment with your fellow campers might not be quite as restful as being home in your own bed.
-
Changing of clothing is not permitted. We strongly suggest wearing layers, so you can remain comfortable throughout the evening.
-
We suggest dressing in layers, as the building temperature fluctuates during the night. We strongly suggest wearing a comfortable pair of sneakers.
-
Campers and chaperones sleep in pre-assigned public spaces on the exhibition floors. Sleeping spaces are designated based on group size.
-
Only medical devices can be accommodated. Please indicate this request on your Group Advisory Form.
-
No. Exhibits will be shut down from 11:00 pm to 7:00 am, and campers must remain at their campsites with their chaperones the entire night.
-
For your safety, sleeping areas are assigned so they do not block emergency passageways, doors or telephones. Campers are also not permitted to sleep in or under exhibits. LSC is subject to random fire marshal inspections and are required to be in compliance with all fire and occupancy regulations. An LSC staff member will inspect your campsite prior to light out and may ask you to adjust the position of your bedding.
-

-
Yes. You are welcome to remain in the building the entire next day.
-
Lights out begins at 11:30 pm. The lights go back on beginning at 6:30 am. It takes a full 30 minutes to get all of the lights off and then on again.

-
For your safety, the building does not get completely dark. If you require complete darkness, we strongly recommend using a sleeping mask.
-
The building is set to 68 degrees. This may feel warm when you are exploring and colder when you are sleeping. We suggest you wear layers for comfort.
-
Basic first aid is available. However, if more than a small adhesive bandage or ice pack is required and the camper is attending the Camp In without their parent/guardian, New Jersey State Law requires the camper be taken via ambulance to the Jersey City Medical Center, located less than 5 minutes from our building.
-
We suggest bringing everything you need when you initially enter the building for your Camp In. If you need to leave the building at any time, please notify an Overnight Staff member or security officer at the Welcome Desk. Children are not permitted to leave the building until it is time to take the gear back to you car in the morning.
-
Lost and found is located at the Welcome Desk. Liberty Science Center is not responsible for lost or stolen items.
-

-

-
Camp Ins will be cancelled if Liberty Science Center closes due to inclement weather. Decisions about Camp In closures will be made by Liberty Science Center by noon on the day of the Camp In. The cancellation will be communicated to the group liaison and posted on www.lsc.org. Liberty Science Center will make every effort to reschedule a group; however, if a mutually acceptable date cannot be found for a group, registration fees will be refunded in full.
