Hundreds of scissor-like connectors expand and contract the globe all day

Designed by artist and engineer Chuck Hoberman and installed during the opening of the original Science Center in 1992, the Hoberman Sphere has welcomed millions of guests to Liberty Science Center for more than 20 years.

A pulley system holds the iconic Sphere in place over PSE&G Court. A computer program and a motor work together to time and control the Hoberman's motions. Make your way to the upper mezzanine area to learn more about the Sphere's engineering and design, catch an amazing video about Chuck Hoberman's work, and get a closer look at the Sphere at work.
