This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 landing – when humans stepped on the Moon for the very first time – and there’s no better place to celebrate this historic anniversary than at Liberty Science Center! Join us July 20 and July 21 for Moon Mania: The 50th Anniversary of Apollo 11.
All weekend, take your own small step to the Moon via special activities and themed shows. Head to LSC’s Jennifer Chalsty Planetarium – the biggest planetarium in the Western Hemisphere – for Apollo to the Moon!, an immersive show taking you through all the historic moments of the Space Race (playing at 11:40 am, 2:10 pm, and 4:40 pm). Perform activities inspired by real NASA engineers, such as aircraft testing in our Aerodynamics Lab. Begin your space training by performing basic tasks while wearing astronaut gloves. Rock out to space-themed songs in our Out of This World Laser Show (playing at 12:30 pm and 3:50 pm)!
You can also get a close-up look at the Moon via our Science on a Sphere interactive globe, which displays HD images directly uploaded from NASA. Over in the JDW 3D Science Theater, catch Fly Me to the Moon, a family-friendly 3D film following three young houseflies as they stow away aboard the Apollo 11 flight (playing at 11:00 am, 12:45 pm, and 3:30 pm).
Plus, don’t forget to visit the café for snacks inspired by the Apollo 11 mission! Eat like an astronaut with food that was actually available to the crew, including spaghetti with meat sauce (Neil Armstrong’s favorite) and chicken salad wraps (bread isn’t allowed in space, due to crumbs making their way into the equipment!).
Dates: July 20 & 21
