Today, February 3, marks the 195th birthday of Dr. Elizabeth Blackwell, the first woman to receive a medical degree in America.

Dr. Blackwell was a pioneer for women’s rights and medical education. However, she worked tirelessly to secure equality for all in the medical profession.

In 1875, she helped establish, and was a professor of gynecology at, the New London School of Medicine for Women. Dr. Blackwell had many achievements but she also faced many struggles. Some may even say these struggles are still alive today for many female physicians.

Liberty Science Center is proud to feature three amazing female surgeons in the “Live From Surgery” program. We would like to say thank you to each of them for giving future medical professionals an experience they will never forget, and for providing insights into surgical procedures, anatomy, risk factors, and careers in health care fields.
