It can be tricky to plan a field trip for students in an Anatomy and Physiology class. Luckily, Liberty Science Center offers an up-close look at the human body with our Live From Surgery program.
Live From Surgery, one of LSC’s marquee educational programs, allows students from middle school through nursing school to witness the sights and sounds of live surgery via videoconferencing technology while asking questions of the surgical team at various New Jersey hospitals. Students learn about surgical procedures, the equipment used, education paths leading to careers in medical professions, and healthy lifestyle choices.
Last year, we expanded our Live From Surgery program and brought it to Neptune High School in Neptune, NJ. Several times a year, Neptune students get to witness Live From Surgery directly from their school.
What makes this partnership unique is that Neptune High School acts as a satellite location for school districts located in central and south NJ. So, Neptune students aren’t the only ones who got to witness the program. At a recent broadcast in Neptune earlier this month, students from Ocean Township High School were in attendance too. Using Neptune High School as an alternate site for Live From Surgery will allow us to expand the program’s outreach to school districts that have difficult traveling to LSC due to distance.
At the recent broadcast in Neptune, students had the opportunity to interact with Dr. John Brown III and the rest of the surgical team at Morristown Medical Center in Morristown, NJ. Students watched as Dr. Brown operated on a patient in her late 70s who was in need of a cardiac bypass procedure. Students were energetic and engaged as they asked questions about the surgical methods and responsibilities, with one of the most popular questions being “How did you know this was the surgery you wanted to specialize in?” Our Live From Surgery facilitator, Rosa Catala-Steidle, also passed out surgical props and models to the students so they could get an up-close view while watching the surgery.
