This kind of eclipse is called a “Ring of Fire” eclipse because in some areas—including parts of the US—the moon will be exactly in the middle of the sun’s disc, causing the appearance of a bright ring of sunlight surrounding the moon.
Here in New Jersey, we will see a partial eclipse. We have fun and fascinating activities planned for the day, including:
- Safe solar viewing glasses, free for every ticketed guest and LSC member, while supplies last. These glasses will also be great for viewing the April 8, 2024 eclipse.
- The Eclipse Show in the Jennifer Chalsty Planetarium at 10:50 am. It’s a special all-live show explaining why eclipses happen, showing what we’ll see during that day’s eclipse, and previewing the Great American Eclipse of April 8, 2024.
- Science on a Sphere, our six-foot illuminated display globe, will be open 11:00 am – 3:00 pm and will show the path of this eclipse across the globe.
- Hands-on astronomy activities led by LSC’s STEM educators from 11:00 am – 3:00 pm.
- A live webcast, 12:00 to 2:30 pm. LSC planetarium experts will interpret views of the eclipse from other locations around the globe.
- Solar telescopes on the LSC lawn for safe partial-eclipse viewing (weather permitting) from 12:00 - 2:30.
