By embedding pilot programs within a premier academic health system, the partnership enables rapid iteration, real-time feedback, and data-informed scaling of promising technologies.
RWJBarnabas Health and SciTech Scity’s Healthcare Innovation Engine are set to administer the first FDA-approved cuffless blood pressure patch designed for continuous 24-hour monitoring—even during sleep—to support more accurate diagnoses and personalized treatment.
The Biobeat cuffless blood pressure patch program is one of two groundbreaking pilot initiatives emanating from the Healthcare Innovation Engine at SciTech Scity, the 30-acre “city of tomorrow” developed by Liberty Science Center in Jersey City. The Healthcare Innovation Engine aims to transform healthcare delivery for patients, families, and caregivers by working with digital-health startup companies to address critical gaps in care.
Created in collaboration with RWJBarnabas Health as part of its multi-year partnership with Liberty Science Center’s SciTech Scity, the two pilots exemplify the Engine's mission to support emerging technologies and bring about cutting-edge solutions that are practical, patient-centered, and responsive to real-world challenges in our healthcare system, according to Liberty Science Center President and CEO Paul Hoffman.

The second pilot, with Dimer Health, implements a physician-led telehealth clinic approach to post-ER care, with a specific focus on uninsured patients who historically lack established care pathways and consistent access to providers. Also being conducted in conjunction with Jersey City Medical Center, it aims to bridge the care gap in the 30 days following ER discharge, which is the most vulnerable period for patients.

Pilot 1: Redefining Hypertension Diagnosis – A Study on Continuous Blood Pressure Monitoring with Wearable Tech
Biobeat, a med-tech leader in hypertension diagnostics and treatment, is transforming ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM) with the first FDA-approved, cuffless blood pressure patch.
By replacing traditional, cumbersome devices with a simple, wearable patch equipped with a non-invasive sensor, Biobeat enhances patient compliance and ease of use. Its AI-powered platform generates a detailed report immediately after testing, providing clinicians with real-time insights for more accurate diagnoses and improved patient outcomes.
The program is being conducted in conjunction with Dr. Kimberly Skelding, Division Chief of Cardiovascular Services for Jersey City Medical Center and Dr. Pragnesh Gadhvi, who oversees the Hypertension Program at Jersey City Medical Center.
Pilot 2: Revolutionizing Post-Discharge Care – A Study on Telehealth-Driven Recovery for Underserved Patients
Through the implementation of Dimer Health’s transformative, physician-led telehealth clinic approach to post-medical discharge care, this pilot is designed to reduce hospital readmissions and emergency department returns by 30% and address an incredibly critical gap in discharge care. The first 30 days following ER discharge are the most vulnerable period for patients, with a heightened risk of complications, readmissions, and preventable emergency visits. This pilot focuses on bridging that high-risk window with continuous, accessible virtual care, ensuring patients receive timely follow-up, monitoring, and intervention when it matters most.
The pilot with Jersey City Medical Center will have a specific focus on uninsured patients who historically lack established-care pathways and consistent access to providers. Over the course of 6 months, some 500 patients at Jersey City Medical Center will receive aggressive monitoring, personalized communication, and a range of clinical services including medication reconciliation, dietary consulting, lab studies, and bridge care to specialists.

What’s Next
In its next wave of pilots planned to launch in 2025, the Healthcare Innovation Engine will extend innovations to other areas of care beyond cardiovascular health, fostering agility and responsiveness to emerging healthcare needs such as the mental health crisis and rising cancer rates. The Engine is poised to address the distinct care needs of underserved patients who often face higher rates of comorbidities and mental health challenges. Focusing on more than one area at a time allows the Engine to remain more agile and responsive to emerging needs and opportunities.
