This holiday season, be sure to check out one of Liberty Science Center’s coolest new experiences: the Shadow Wall!

Here’s how it works: Simply stand in front of the Shadow Wall and wait for the UV spotlight to go off. When it does, your shadow will be temporarily imprinted on the wall from that brief moment in time!

So how does it do that?

The wall is covered in a special phosphorescent paint. The paint absorbs energy from the light, exciting the electrons in its atoms. As the electrons slowly become less excited, they release that energy back as a visible glow. Anywhere your body blocked the UV light from reaching the wall prevented those electrons from becoming excited, resulting in your shadow appearing to be stuck on the wall.
