Dive Into Freshwater pHun at LSC’s BASF Lab on Aug 23!

LSC News

Think you can tell how healthy water is just by looking at it? Think again!

At Freshwater pHun, part of the exciting BASF Kids’ Lab at Liberty Science Center, young scientists will dive into a hands-on investigation that challenges what we think we know about water quality.

In this interactive lab, guests will use real pH test strips to explore the acidity or alkalinity of simulated New Jersey bodies of water. But together, we’ll discover why pH alone doesn’t tell the whole story.

To truly understand the health of a body of water, scientists also study the tiny creatures that live in it. These small but fascinating aquatic animals (like mayflies, dragonflies, and snails) can only survive within specific pH conditions, making them excellent indicators of water quality. Through engaging activities and fun facts, kids will learn how combining pH testing and sampling of these tiny creatures gives scientists a more complete picture of water’s health.

Freshwater pHun is a fantastic way to spark curiosity and environmental awareness—so grab your lab coat and join us on August 23!

The BASF Kids’ Lab is designed for children ages 6–12, with at least one adult chaperone per four children. Participation is free with paid LSC admission or membership.
