How we're celebrating Astronomy Day and Earth Day

LSC News

You probably know that Sunday, April 22 is Earth Day, but did you also know that Saturday, April 21 is Astronomy Day? We've got a lot going on for both days!

In celebration of Astronomy Day and Earth Day, we're launching the Weston Family Lab for Earth and Space Exploration, a stunning new exhibition and laboratory classroom. This space is home to "Science on a Sphere," a six-foot suspended globe developed by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). This illuminating globe offers real time access to NOAA and NASA data, and allows visitors to witness weather and geological phenomenon, as well as happenings in space and undersea.

All weekend, you can experience FREE 10-minute shows in this exciting new space, included with LSC general admission.

On Astronomy Day, the free show in the Weston Family Lab is "From Globe to Globe," an exploration of the Sun, Moon, planets, and other features of our solar system.

And since it's Astronomy Day, we also encourage you to head into the Jennifer Chalsty Planetarium and LSC Giant Dome Theater – the largest and most technologically advanced planetarium in the Western Hemisphere – to see one of our exhilarating planetarium shows!

On Earth Day, the free show in the Weston Family Lab is “Earth in Motion,” an eye-opening show focusing on earthquakes, tsunamis, and other tectonic events. Don't miss it!

We also have Earth Day-themed adventures for young learners. We've set up a special Greenhouse filled with activities. Try your hand at finding creatures that live in a log, pollinating flowers like a bee, looking at real plants under microscopes, helping create a compost bin, recycling trash, and making your own seed sphere to take home and plant.

This weekend's going to be a blast – we can't wait for you to join us!
