Learn the fundamentals of sign language at #LSCAfterDark: Silent Party

LSC After Dark

Spoken word isn’t the only way that we communicate with each other. Our body language matters, too!

On January 19 at our LSC After Dark: Silent Party event, we’re giving you the chance to enhance your communication abilities via a game that will teach you some of the fundamentals of American Sign Language (ASL).

The game, which will be led by ASL students from the Seymour Joseph Institute of American Sign Language, starts out like charades. You’re given a word, and then you must act out the word using only your body language.

Next, you’ll learn a few components of ASL. You’ll receive another word, and this time, you’ll act out the word using the signs that you’ve just learned.

LSC Exhibition Lead Alison Walminski, who is leading the game at the party, says she first became interested in learning sign language after seeing it used with Koko, the famed gorilla who has a vocabulary of more than 1,000 words.

“It’s a very beautiful, very different language,” Walminski says. “And if you are in a very loud space, you can communicate without losing your voice or shouting across the room.”

Join us Thursday night! Get tickets now for LSC After Dark: Silent Party. 21+ only.
