Liberty Science Center partners with Kulture City to become a Certified Sensory Inclusive Venue

LSC News

Liberty Science Center (LSC) is now a Certified Sensory Inclusive® Venue, increasing its accessibility and inclusion for visitors with sensory needs! In partnership with Kulture City, LSC is committed to creating sensory-inclusive STEM programming and providing an inclusive experience for learners of all ages and abilities.

We’re proud to share that 100% of LSC staff are KultureCity Sensory Accessibility/Inclusive™ certified. The certification process for staff includes being trained by leading medical and neurodivergent professionals on how to recognize and support individuals with sensory needs and how to handle a sensory overload situation.

"Liberty Science Center strives to make the power, promise, and pure fun of science and technology accessible to all," said Ivory Williams, Vice President of STEM Education. "In an effort to improve our exhibition and program experiences for guests with sensory processing challenges, we worked with Kulture City to better support an inclusive community and foster a more inclusive environment.”

Families can download the free KultureCity App which identifies certified venues, sensory features, and where they can access them. KultureCity created a social story which provides a preview of what to expect when exploring LSC. We also have a Social Narrative and Sensory Map available online for download.

Sensory Bags are also available to all guests who may feel overwhelmed when visiting LSC. These bags contain noise canceling headphones, fidget tools, verbal cue cards, and KCVIP badges. Sensory Bags can be borrowed at no cost by leaving an ID at our Information Desk.

"Empowering communities through inclusion and innovation, Liberty Science Center is aligned with the same visionary spirit as KultureCity and is championing a world where every individual, regardless of ability, is not just accepted but celebrated for their unique contributions to the tapestry of humanity!”said Uma Srivastava, Executive Director at KultureCity.

KultureCity, a leading nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting inclusivity and accessibility for individuals with sensory needs. KultureCity’s flagship initiative, the Sensory Inclusive™ program, has been widely embraced by venues, stadiums, and cultural institutions like LSC.

Sensory sensitivities or challenges with sensory regulation are often experienced by individuals with autism, dementia, PTSD and other similar conditions; age is no factor in this. Individuals might become overwhelmed from the crowds, lights, sounds, smells, or other external stimuli at LSC. With its new certification, LSC is now better prepared to assist guests with sensory sensitivities in having the most comfortable and accommodating experience possible.
