LSC’s new ‘Spoiler Alert’ lab puts milk to the test

LSC News

Ever wonder why the milk you leave out “by accident” gets so chunky, funky, and gunky? LSC’s new lab, “Spoiler Alert,” can help you understand why.

Join us on the third floor in Microbes Rule! to try out this lab – a hands-on experience all about the microbes that grow on nearly all surfaces, including the things we eat and drink.

In “Spoiler Alert,” you’ll examine three samples of milk: fresh milk (made from powdered milk that morning), refrigerated milk (made from powdered milk three days ago, kept in the refrigerator), and unrefrigerated milk (made from powdered milk three days ago, left out on the shelf).

Using a dropper, you'll use the chemical resazurin to reveal how much bacteria can be found in the milk samples (a blue color means less bacteria, while pink means more). This resembles the same techniques that actual agricultural scientists use!

Which milk sample do you think has the least bacteria in it? How about the most? We don’t want to “spoil” anything for you! Check out the new lab on your next visit to LSC, located in Microbes Rule!
