On May 10, 2023, LSC partnered with NASA for our second “NASA Night at LSC.”

Throughout the evening, we offered NASA-focused educational content, from presentations on the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) to the Artemis program and beyond!

“NASA Night at LSC” was held as one of LSC’s Community Evenings. These are nights that the building is open at no cost to all Jersey City residents, as well as to students and families from qualifying school districts.

In the planetarium, guests enjoyed the show “NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope,” led by Mike Menzel, a JWST Engineer who works for NASA Goddard in Maryland.

Menzel collaborated with LSC’s planetarium team to bring the story of NASA’s new telescope to life on the planetarium dome. The images from the Webb looked spectacular on the planetarium’s giant 90-foot screen.

Also in the planetarium, guests enjoyed the show “Back to the Moon: NASA Artemis,” led by LSC’s Planetarium Director Mike Shanahan.

In this program, guests learned about NASA’s initiative to return humans to the Moon within this decade. The LSC team presented animations and actual video of the historic Artemis I mission from last fall as it orbited the Moon and returned successfully to Earth.

Many programs throughout the night were translated into Spanish by Maria Betancur, LSC’s Coordinator of STEM Partnerships.

Additional highlights included “Meet an Animal,” where guests encountered LSC’s resident critters; “Blast Off!”, an explosive demo of how rockets get off the ground; and LSC’s Science on a Sphere, an interactive globe that lets guests see earthquakes, hurricane tracks, sea surface temperatures, weather patterns, and more.
