Our eclipse shades are safe for solar viewing!

LSC News

UPDATE 8/17/17: Our gift shop is sold out of eclipse shades, however we will be giving them out for free (while supplies last) to guests who join us on Monday for eclipse activities!

In the days leading up to The Great American Eclipse on Monday, August 21, there have been a lot of questions about whether we sell eclipse shades, whether we will provide them on Eclipse Day, and whether they are safe for solar viewing.

The answer to all three of these questions is: yes!

We currently sell eclipse shades in the LSC gift shop that comply with the ISO 12312-2 international safety standard for filters for direct viewing of the Sun. You can purchase them every day through August 21.

On the day of the eclipse, we will provide free shades (while supplies last) for guests joining us for our eclipse activities.

There are a lot of ways you can safely experience the eclipse while visiting us at LSC. In addition to the shades, we will have telescopes and sunspotters specially set up for eclipse viewing, as well as a live remote broadcast from Cadiz, Kentucky where the eclipse will be total.

We can't wait! Join us on Monday, August 21 for one of the most exciting astronomical events of our lifetimes.
