Why we got rid of plastic straws in the Liberty Science Center cafe

LSC News

Here at Liberty Science Center, we're committed to making a positive impact on the environment. A few examples include our green roof, our solar arrays in the parking lot, our recycling efforts around the building, and our 10,000-watt wind turbine that provides a percentage of the electricity that LSC needs to operate.

Recently we have partnered with our food provider, Restaurant Associates, to decrease our plastic use. Together we are undertaking a sustainable initiative to phase out the plastic straws in our cafeteria, Cafe Skylines.

There are still straws available to guests who ask for them at the register. These polylactide straws, however, are made of plant matter and compostable.

Studies indicate there are 15-51 trillion pieces of plastic in the world's oceans. Thank you to our guests for helping us take steps toward sustainable solutions not just in the Science Center, but in the world beyond!
