Schools, prepare thy chess clubs, the World Chess Championship is coming to New York City.

According to the Wall St Journal, for the first time since 1995, the best chess players in the world will gather this November in NYC for a one-on-one tournament organized by the World Chess Federation.

Liberty Science Center’s Visiting Grandmaster in Residence, Fabiano Caruana, is one of the players that will vie for the opportunity to play against current World Champion Magnus Carlsen in the tournament.

“[Caruana has] a very good chance of being one of the two that wins,” said Dylan McClain, the editor of WorldChess.com. “Caruana grew up in Brooklyn, where he learned to play chess. He has something in his game that he can go at Carlsen.”

While the venue is still yet to be determined, organizers promise that the public will have a chance to experience the tournament from anywhere in the world.

“We’re focusing 99% of our efforts on online viewership,” said Agon CEO, Ilya Merenzon, adding that the online broadcasts will feature a variety of camera angles, an educational component to help explain the action, and two commentators analyzing the match live, which has become commonplace.

The Championship will take place from November 10th to November 30th. You can bet we’ll have some special programming and events as the date gets closer.

In the meantime, check out our interview with Fabiano when he came to Liberty Science Center for our Chess and Magic event:
