Chemistry Under Construction: LSC's Annual ChemExpo

LSC News

In partnership with the North Jersey Section of the American Chemical Society, Liberty Science Center welcomed guests for its annual ChemExpo on Saturday, October 24, 2026. ChemExpo celebrated National Chemistry Week, promoting the value of chemistry in everyday life. With the theme “Chemistry Under Construction,” this year’s event focused on the chemistry of construction materials, including the various materials that build the homes and bridges shaping our communities.

Thanks to Amneal Pharmaceuticals for sponsoring LSC’s ChemExpo! Volunteers from Amneal hosted a demonstration on acids and bases, where visitors learned about how acids and bases interact with each other along with their properties and characteristics.

As part of ChemExpo, students from local college, university, and high schools present themed projects in a themed showcase. Participation included Caldwell University, Drew University, Essex County College, Highland Park High School, John P. Stevens High School, Kean University, Princeton University International School of Mathematics and Science, Ramapo College, Seton Hall University, St. Peter’s University, and the North Jersey Section of the American Chemical Society.

LSC’s Chem Expo also included exploration of one of the biggest construction projects in the world: The Hudson Tunnel Project. Guests from the Gateway Development Commission Community Outreach Team displayed a to-scale model of the tunnel-boring machine that will be tunneling through the Palisades to create this major improvement to our region’s infrastructure.

National Chemistry Week is recognized on the third week of October annually. Next year’s theme is Molecular Melodies!

LSC’s ChemExpo is supported in part by Amneal Pharmaceuticals.
