When the Hubble Space Telescope was launched in 1990, it revolutionized astronomy, helping us better understand the universe and our place in it. The telescope continues to provide us with beautiful views of distant galaxies, the remnants of exploded stars, and the birthplaces of new ones. It has also helped to set the stage for our latest and greatest telescope – the James Webb Space Telescope.

Dr. Green works with the Space Telescope Science Institute – which helps operate both of these incredible space telescopes – and focuses his own research on how stars and planets begin their lives.

Stars are born in gigantic clouds of gas and dust called star forming nebulae. Inside these nebulae, pockets of this gas and dust slowly collapse under their own gravity, shrinking and heating up until the point where it turns into a star. If there is enough leftover gas and dust nearby, it eventually shrinks further to form planets. To understand this process, we need the most detailed images possible from our telescopes in space.

At his Space Talk in the planetarium, Dr. Green shared the latest spectacular images from James Webb and Hubble, showing audiences in great detail baby stars and stars just about to be born. Among these was a recently released image of HH 211:
