On Dec. 19, 2019, we celebrated the holiday season at LSC After Dark: Candyland! Guests 21 and over came to the Science Center for a night of sweet science, icy cool experiments, and sugary surprises all throughout the building.
It was an incredible evening, and the perfect way to celebrate the final LSC After Dark event of the decade! Here are a few of our favorite highlights from the night:
Who needs ice skating when you have sock skating? All night, guests took a spin on our Sock Skating Rink, made from a high-tech synthetic polymer surface. It isn’t made of real ice, but it is really slippery!
Check out a video of the Sock Skating Rink in action:
Guests were invited to play a candy version of Minute to Win It!, with tasks such as sorting M&Ms and Skittles by color, stacking Smarties into a tower, and using only your mouth to hook together candy canes. Super fun – and super challenging!
Yum! Throughout the night, our educators taught guests the science of creating their own bubble gum.
Our friends from JC Oddities Market returned this month with a special Holiday Bazaar! Local vendors joined the party with unique gifts, art, and jewelry for guests to bring home to their loved ones.
Guests also toured the neighborhood with local food vendors from Midnight Market! This month's food vendors included Cryo Cream, Hold My Knots, Waffle Totz, Tayby & Co., Tojo Kitchen, Bearded One BBQ, Empanada Papa, and Gusti Di Sicilia.
This month, we partnered with Jersey Cares and asked guests to donate new and/or gently used coats at the event. Thanks to all who participated!
Right upon entering the building, guests were greeted by a giant gingerbread house that they got to help decorate!
This month, we took the classic Candyland board game and brought it to the planetarium! In an interactive adventure like nothing we’ve ever done before at LSC After Dark, guests teamed up and worked together to complete a game of Candyland (or, in our version, the Milky Way!) projected on the massive planetarium dome.
In addition to Candyland in Space: The Game, guests also enjoyed a Laser Wonderland laser show, featuring artists such as Mariah Carey, Ariana Grande, the Jonas Brothers, Dean Martin, and Adam Sandler.
Guests enjoyed our current premium exhibition, Angry Birds Universe! In this adventure based on the popular Angry Birds characters, guests played a real-life version of the game – by using real slingshots to send birds soaring! – plus designed and animated their own birds, climbed a giant rock wall, and more.
Every month at LSC After Dark, our Innovation Station shows off the latest in must-see tech!
This month, we were joined by the company Kitty Hawk, who had “The Flyer” on display. “The Flyer” is an all-electric VTOL (vertical take-off and landing) single-seat aerial vehicle that employs 10 individual lift fans to fly 3 ft. to 10 ft. over water.
It was a really unique opportunity for guests to explore the future of flight and transportation!
Over at the Photo Booth, guests showed off their sweet side with candy props!
We saw so many hilarious ugly sweaters throughout the night!
