Big drones, little drones, quiet ones, loud ones! No drone was left out yesterday as Liberty Science Center threw its second annual Day of Drones event. In partnership with the New York City Drone Film Festival, we packed our building with activities, films and classes to celebrate the flying machines that are changing the way we live.

Whether you’re a professional pilot or new to drones, the event had something for everybody. Here are just a few of the experiences we offered yesterday:

360-Degree Virtual Reality: Many of our visitors got to experience virtual reality for the first time! In an experience sponsored by Samsung, guests got to try on 360-degree virtual reality helmets that simulated the experience of flying drones while snowboarding.

The Dronesium: We set up our massive Dronesium cage in Governors Hall, where expert flyers demonstrated their impressive abilities. Later in the day, guests got to step into the cage and try their own hand at flying.

All-Day Races: Pro drone flyers raced each other outside and in our Skyscraper exhibit. All day, guests got to watch the action live from the drone’s perspective via first person view (FPV) goggles.

Amazing Classes: For people who wanted to sharpen their drone skills, we offered several classes including “Intro to Aerial Thermography,” “Color Correction for Drone Cinema,” “Drones 201: From Hobby to Moneymaker,” “The Power of Story: How to Make Better Drone Films,” and more.

Movie Screenings and Director Q&As: We screened winning films from this year’s New York City Drone Film Festival, plus Q&A sessions with the directors themselves.

Drone Expo: Our Jennifer A. Chalsty Center was packed with drone vendors, allowing guests to see the latest in drone and drone camera technology.

The Drone Blimp: Over in Governors Hall, a team of drone pilots flew a massive drone blimp around the room. It was a sight to be seen!
