LSC's glorious TP Blizzard blows toilet paper at speeds of 160 mph

LSC News

'Tis the season for science! LSC's annual 12 Days of Science winter celebration has arrived. Join us every day through Jan. 1, 2019 and experience a building filled with seasonal activities, experiments, planetarium shows, and more.

There are many new adventures this year (click here to see the full list), as well as some returning favorites like the TP Blizzard!

TP Blizzard

The TP Blizzard – like the name suggests – is a glorious blizzard of toilet paper that we blast throughout Governors Hall every day at 12:00 pm.

Check out this video of the TP Blizzard in action:

Here are a few fast facts about the TP Blizzard:

  • The TP Blizzard uses 18 leaf blowers. Each blower pushes air out at 160 mph (the equivalent of a Category 5 hurricane!)
  • 18 rolls are used during each TP Blizzard, which adds up to 6,150 feet of toilet paper blown each time.
  • Throughout the course of 12 Days of Science, we will blow a total of 43,042 feet of toilet paper – which is more than 8 miles!
  • The TP Blizzard machine was inspired by Bernoulli's principle, which states that a rise in pressure in a flowing fluid must always be accompanied by a decrease in speed. Our machine demonstrates this principle via toilet paper!
  • All our toilet paper used in the TP Blizzard is recycled, and the toilet paper rolls are given to our animals for enrichment activities.

We can't wait for you to experience the TP Blizzard in person! Check it out every day during 12 Days of Science (Dec. 26 through Jan. 1) at 12:00 pm. Be sure to share your best photos online using the hashtag #LSC12Days, and you'll be entered in our 12 Days of Science photo contest.
