Cat videos aren’t the only things that go viral – microbes do, too! In fact, the word “viral” comes from the word “virus.” Viruses are microscopic particles that contain genetic material and need living cells to replicate.

Now, our Microbes Rule! exhibition has a new, interactive Building Immunity Table that explores the science behind viruses and how they spread. Did you know infectious diseases affect 5 to 20 percent of the U.S. population every year, and account for 5.4 percent of all deaths? And did you know 10 percent of our DNA comes from ancient viruses that infected our ancestors millions of years ago? These are just some of the stats you’ll uncover at the table.

But the Building Immunity Table also explores the ways that scientists are fighting back, too. Discover some of the most groundbreaking moments in history – like in 1995, when HAART (highly active antiretroviral therapy), the first effective treatment allowing HIV-positive individuals to live a normal life, became available. It caused an immediate decline in HIV-related deaths.
