Music, art, and tech come together for LSC After Dark: SciChella

LSC After Dark

Science + Coachella = SciChella!

On Thursday, April 19, Liberty Science Center turned into SciChella for our latest LSC After Dark event for guests 21 and over. It was a night filled with music, art, and tech, borrowing inspiration from the famous Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in Indio, California.

All night, guests rocked out with four different DJs taking turns throughout the evening: DJ Souffle, DJ Prince Hakim, DJ Rob Cast, and Bizz Nice.

Guests also got to meet eight local artists and experience their work: Ryan Margaca, Alexandra Rosano, Joseph Nelson, David S., Moe Murdock, Joi-Louise, Jenna Polascak, and Balam Soto.

Many of the artists showed how they incorporate technology into their work. Balam Soto, for example, displayed his creation called “Exp.Inst.Wood,” a custom-made instrument that responds with different sounds and colors when touched by the player.

Our special activities at SciChella incorporated art, music, and technology in exciting ways. Guests learned how to make tie dye slime, and even take it home with them. "Other fun activities focused on pattern recognition through crafting friendship bracelets and the anatomy of plants with flower dissection and crown making.

Over in the Joseph D. Williams 3D Science Theater, guests played songs on a keyboard connected to one of LSC’s 1-million-volt Tesla coils, and watched as their touch of a piano key resulted in bursts of musical lightning.

On the third floor, guests experienced our brand new exhibit: the Dream Machine, which made its debut at SciChella. This interactive, sensory adventure that combines smell with sound, touch, and light was created by multimedia artist Emilie Baltz and originally debuted at New York’s Panorama Festival. Now it has a permanent home at LSC.
