Mickey the green-winged macaw with his new enrichment toy

Thanks to the campers at LSC Science Camp who made enrichment toys for our animals!

LSC News

Shoutout to the campers in our “Animal Spotlight” course, who made enrichment toys for the animals at LSC!

In the photo below, we see Mickey the green-winged macaw playing with a swinging toy made up of colorful blocks and other items that are safe for parrots (the colorful blocks were all dyed with parrot-safe dye!).

This toy provides enrichment for Mickey, because it allows him to use his feet and beak for dexterity. He can also chew it and use it to keep his beak trim.

The campers also designed toilet paper rolls to give to the naked mole rats! The mole rats use these rolls to keep their teeth trim, and challenges them to think of how to get through the burrow.

All the enrichment pieces the campers made are meant to replicate natural challenges and natural behaviors acted out by animals in the wild.

In addition to making enrichment toys, the rising first graders in “Animal Spotlight” got a behind-the-scenes look at LSC’s animal care center, made animal habitats, and met a veterinarian. It was an amazing summer!
