Meeting a therapy dog on Special Needs Day

Therapy dogs and more fun on Special Needs Day

LSC News

Woof! On Tuesday, Dec. 3, we were joined by therapy dogs from Creature Comfort Pet Therapy in Morris Plains.

These furry friends visited the Science Center as part of Special Needs Day.

Liberty Science Center features experiences for guests of all ages and stages of learning every day. But on Special Needs Days, we offer an entire day of science learning tailored to special needs classes.

Additional activities on Special Needs Day included the animal artifacts table, where guests touched hippo skulls, a gaboon viper skeleton, and more; Sensory Stations, where guests enjoyed various textures, sounds, and movement exploration; Built for a Bug, where guests constructed habitats for cockroaches; the Touch Tank, where guests handled spiny sea urchins, snails, shellfish, and more; animal meet and greets, where guests met animals like rats, snakes, and tortoises; and dancing with Mr. Chris, where guests rocked out to high energy, classic children’s songs.

We also debuted our new Social Narrative, which is used to help prepare learners on the autism spectrum with navigating new experiences and environments. Our Social Narrative highlights many experiences at the Science Center, including the friendly guards you’ll meet upon arrival, the elevator and stairs you’ll use to navigate our building, and the monkeys, snakes, frogs, and other animals you’ll meet on the third floor.

Thanks to all who joined us for Special Needs Day!
