Think you’re a good chess player? Prove it by playing against the world’s leading chess champion, Magnus Carlsen, live and in-person at Liberty Science Center.

Here’s how it works: Simply download the Play Magnus app for free on your phone. From there, create a username and password and join the “Liberty Science Center NY/NJ Chess Challenge” competition within the Live Events tab.

Once that’s done, you’ll be able to play chess against a virtual version of Magnus. You have until Thursday, September 15 at 11:59 pm EST to play, accumulate points and show us what you’ve got. On Friday, September 16, Liberty Science Center will select a winner to move on to the next round.

If that person is you, you’ll win a seat alongside 12 of the best chess players in the world as they compete with Magnus at the Play Magnus Challenge at Liberty Science Center on Thursday, September 22.

Please only compete if you are able to attend the event on September 22 and reside in the NJ/NY area. The first half of the day (at 10:30 AM) will include a brunch and blitz, featuring Magnus and U.S. chess champion Fabiano Caruana (fresh off USA’s victory at the 42nd Chess Olympiad!). The second half of the day (at noon), Magnus will play 13 games (one of those games will be against you) which will be telecast live across the globe.

Transportation will be provided for the winner and a guest to and from Liberty Science Center. The winner can also bring 10 guests/supporters to the live portion of the event.
