Here are the results of our 5th Annual Cockroach Count

LSC News

After a long day of counting, we finally have a number! Our animal team counted a total of 1,935 cockroaches during our Cockroach Count.

That's a lot of cockroaches!

Our Cockroach Count is an annual event held every year on Pi Day (March 14). On this day, LSC’s animal team counts all the Madgascar hissing cockroach we have in our habitat, from the big ones to the little ones.

They do this for three reasons: to check on the health of the colony, to change the substrate (or dirt) that the roaches live in, and because it’s a lot of fun!

Throughout the day, guests are invited to watch the count as it happens, submit their guess as to what the number is, and ask questions to our animal team.

At the end of the day, the cockroaches are all released back into their habitat. Check it out:

Congratulations to our team on another job well done! You can meet the Madagascar hissing cockroaches, as well as 100+ more fascinating animal species, every day on the third floor in our Eat and Be Eaten exhibition.
