LSC summer campers to embark on STEM sailing adventure

LSC News

This summer, campers at Liberty Science Center will embark on a STEM sailing adventure!

In partnership with Steve and Doris Colgate’s Offshore Sailing School, LSC is offering a “STEM Sailing” program this summer at Science Camp that intertwines science and the thrill of the open water.

Campers will spend the first half of their day at LSC learning the physics of sailing and the second half of their day applying their skills on a sailboat.

With an experienced captain onboard, the young mariners will sail by Lady Liberty, Ellis Island and Liberty State Park while learning concepts such as boat design and buoyancy, navigation, water and air currents, tacking, jibing, rigging and de-rigging and knots. Parents will also have the incredible opportunity to photograph their children from the shore.

We first introduced “STEM Sailing” last summer and brought it back this year due to popular demand! “STEM Sailing” is aimed at students entering grades 7 and 8.
